[pfsb] it's so FLUFFY
In Wei Wuxian's defense, it isn't as if he forgot one should never eat free food unless it came from Madam Bar or the waitrats. It's simply that after nearly a year where he has -- only on occasion, mind you! -- accepted food and drink from strangers with no ill effects, he may have let his guard slip. Just a little.
Besides, he was so absorbed in his work that for all he knew, a waitrat had deposited the little bowl of animal-shaped desserts on his table. It wouldn't have been the first time he failed to notice one of them trying to get his attention.
So when he absently picked up a cracker to nibble on it as he worked through a particularly thorny set of talisman calculations --
Well.
The little black rabbit that now sits on the table, a red ribbon looped around one ear, just wants it emphatically known that this was not his fault.

So, though he blinks sleepily as they make their way across the common room, and he cannot help but let out a tiny bunny yawn, he points both ears forward, letting the cacophony of the inn keep him alert in their short journey.

“Madam Bar,” he asks. “Do you know anything about animal shaped cookies that curse the one who eats of them with transformation?”
no subject
Someone left those out again?! says the writing beneath it. I'm so sorry, Lan Wangji. Yes, one of our tricksters likes to leave those animal crackers around sometimes, but the curse doesn't last long. Twenty-four hours at most.

Attached to the note is a tiny ballpoint pen, so small it could easily be held in a rabbit's mouth, and a pad of paper. Wei Wuxian's ears flick in interest as he leans forward.

Which trickster? he writes.
Or... tries to write. Hopefully, by now, Lan Zhan has gotten good enough at deciphering Wei Wuxian's already-terrible handwriting to figure out the gist.
no subject
Loki. Well, one of the Lokis. The alligator one. You'll know him by the golden horns.
Lan Wangji reads this out and stares at the words in bemusement, as if they might make sense if he does so hard enough.
no subject
Wei Wuxian glances at Lan Zhan and gives him a tiny bunny shrug.
no subject
"Very well," he tells Madam Bar. "Thank you, again."
no subject
Mostly, it just looks like he drapes himself a little further over the side of Lan Zhan's arm. But he tries!

He settles there, spreading his robes over his lap, and lowers his hand enough that Wei Ying can stir from his nest if he wishes.
no subject
After a moment, he grasps the pad of paper between his teeth to drag it down into the nest as well. The pen quickly joins it.
I am all right, he writes; adds a little smiley face to the end like Madam Bar's.
no subject
"Good," he says, stroking a gentle hand along Wei Ying's back. "I am very glad."
no subject
He knew his zhiji must have worried. He always does.
It is interesting, he scribbles. Fun! Nice with you here.
no subject
"I am pleased you are enjoying yourself," he murmurs. "Is there anything that you want? Anything I can do?"
no subject
Meet the forest rabbits? he writes.
no subject
“Of course, if you wish,” he decides. After all, when will he have such an opportunity again?
“I will fetch a basket of greens to take with us, when you are ready.”

The overpowering smells of the inn recede, replaced with an entirely new sweep of scents that, somewhere deep within the instincts of this body, whisper home. Lush greenery, clear water, the musty decay of fallen leaves as they slowly turn to dirt, the richness of soil warmed by the sun. The deeper they go into the forest, the more it reveals: birdsong and insect buzzes, a spider dipping from a tree to spin its web, the skittering of mice, the smell of something dark and musklike that makes him retreat further into Lan Zhan's robes.
But for most of the walk, he cannot stop staring at the beauty around them, transformed into an entirely new place through the senses of a rabbit.

It does not take all that long, considering, before they are drawing near the forest warren. He slows his steps and sets the basket down at the entrance of the small clearing, as is usual, then lowers himself to the ground to wait.
no subject
Well, he won't find out by sitting around!
Hello? he calls, in the same language Lan Zhan could not understand.
no subject
The voice is bright and cheerful and curious, filled with surprise and delight. Starlight gleams from the ears of the rabbit that hops up to the top of the stone ridge and looks down.
You’re new. And with one of our humans, I see. One ear twitches. Are you hoping to join us, little one? Usually I’m the one to extend that invitation.
no subject
Rabbit-zongzhu! I can understand you now! He's laughing as he stretches out his forelegs, dipping into a bow. I am not so new as I appear. I'm one of your humans as well -- only transformed, temporarily.
