In Wei Wuxian's defense, it isn't as if he forgot one should never eat free food unless it came from Madam Bar or the waitrats. It's simply that after nearly a year where he has -- only on occasion, mind you! -- accepted food and drink from strangers with no ill effects, he may have let his guard slip. Just a little.

Besides, he was so absorbed in his work that for all he knew, a waitrat had deposited the little bowl of animal-shaped desserts on his table. It wouldn't have been the first time he failed to notice one of them trying to get his attention.

So when he absently picked up a cracker to nibble on it as he worked through a particularly thorny set of talisman calculations --

Well.

The little black rabbit that now sits on the table, a red ribbon looped around one ear, just wants it emphatically known that this was not his fault.

After years of toil, Hou Yi succeeded in his quest. He locked away the elixir -- a single pill in a carved wooden box -- and vowed to swallow it the next morning as dawn broke over his kingdom. But after her husband had fallen asleep, Chang'e stole from her bed; with her jade rabbit leading the way, she crept toward where the elixir was kept, opened the box...

Wei Wuxian flattens himself to the ground, miming a slow creep across the floor.

...and swallowed the pill down!

He swoops back upright.

Immediately she felt a lightness suffuse her as the elixir worked its magic. To her astonishment, her feet left the floor, and she began to drift toward the ceiling. 'Aiyo,' she cried. 'The elixir is too strong!' And that --

He stamps his foot, once.

-- is when Hou Yi slammed into the room!

Bearberry leaps up and hides his face in Cloudfoot's flank when he lands, shivering.

Lan Wangji hesitates, but the desire to soothe and protect is strong. Slowly, he reaches out to reassure the trembling bunny.

Ah, no, he has scared them too badly! Wei Wuxian gentles his voice, the sleek lines of his body softening.

This was not the end of Chang'e -- remember, she still makes her home on the moon, even to this day. But as Hou Yi saw what his wife had done, ah, did it look like her end was upon her! He reached for his bow, prepared to strike her down as he had struck down the nine suns so many years ago. But before he could:

"Stop!" cried Chang'e's rabbit, throwing himself between Chang'e and her furious husband. "Don't hurt her! Can you not see what you have done, to make her wish she could leave you for the heavens? Do you not still love her enough to let her live?"

So many believed Hou Yi's heart had turned to stone with his cruelty. Surely he could never be moved from his thirst for power. But there, deep within, moved by the courage of this little creature... ah, there was a tiny spark of compassion still remaining. Of love.

So he let his hand fall away from his bow. And as the jade rabbit grabbed the hem of Chang'e's robes, Hou Yi watched as they floated through the window and up, up, toward the moon.

Almost as one, the rabbits look up toward the sky, as if they could see their cousin there, then turn back to Wei Wuxian. Bearberry nestled down under Lan Wangji’s hand, reassured.

Very clever, El-ahrairah approves. I should like to figure out to fly to the moon. Did he ever come back?

No, says Wei Wuxian. As he was Chang'e's constant companion in her mortal life, so he is in her immortality. We honor them both during the Moon Festival in autumn.

(Well... Chang'e more than her rabbit, to be fair. But the warren doesn't need to know that.)

Hmmm. El-ahrairah looks up at the sky thoughtfully, and Rabscuttle groans. My prince, do you not have enough to occupy you here at the ends of the worlds, further than any other rabbit has explored?

El-ahrairah twitches a whisker at him, not deigning to answer that, and hops over to join Bearberry, nudging at his shoulder. Lan Wangji raises his hand as the other rabbit stirs, not wanting him to feel restrained, and El-ahrairah looks at Wei Wuxian.

Tell your friend that he's got a very good way about him, for a human. Both of you are welcome to keep visiting here, whatever form you take. As long as you don't come as a fox or a stoat or the like!

Aiyo, we would never be so impolite! Wei Wuxian flops back onto his side. When we visit, we will visit as harmlessly as we can. And I will be sure to tell him you enjoy his company. His eyes dance. He will be very pleased to hear that; he loves rabbits. He looks after a warren near his home, in Cloud Recesses -- that is why he knows how to reassure, and comfort, and which spots to scratch behind your ears.

Does he! El-ahrairah sits up to examine Lan Wangji, who blinks slowly back at him before glancing at Wei Wuxian. The way that the two of you do here, with visits and gifts of food and polite company? I approve of both.

Rabscuttle heaves a put-upon sigh. Yes, yes, you were right, my prince. They weren't the trouble I thought they would be.

I always am.

Wei Wuxian honks with laughter, toppling onto his back.

Does he always scold you like this, wangye? Ah, I know, I would be distrustful of something a hundred times my size as well, even if it brought food!

Lan Wangji smiles - tiny but real - at this sign that Wei Ying is enjoying himself.

El-ahrairah rolls his eyes. All the time.

You need it, my prince.

You sound like Lan Zhan when we were younger, says Wei Wuxian, amused and deeply, deeply fond. He does not truly scold me anymore, but I would get into far more trouble without him nearby.

Really. El-ahrairah turns to examine Lan Wangji again, and even the other rabbits do as well. Saxifrage says, You offered to tell the story of when you met?

It is not nearly as exciting as the story of Chang'e and her rabbit, he says, and twists to haul himself back to his feet. But if you wish to hear it, I am always happy to tell it.

I would, says Cloudfoot, mostly quiet until now. Please?

Saxifrage hops close to Wei Wuxian and leans against his side.

Ah, with such an attentive audience, how can he resist?

(Besides: he will never tire of talking about Lan Zhan.)

Leaning affably against Saxifrage in kind, he says, In our world, Lan Zhan and I were trained as cultivators. We sought to nourish and grow our spiritual energy, the better to seek justice and protect the weak wherever we go. My sect was called Yunmeng Jiang, of Lotus Pier; his is Gusu Lan, of Cloud Recesses. And one summer, Cloud Recesses invited the best and brightest of all the sects to come train with them, the better to learn new ways of cultivating.

Gusu Lan -- here, he laughs, -- is very strict. They rise early, toil endlessly, and do not stay awake past sunset. They have an enormous wall with three thousand rules carved into the stone. Three thousand! I thought it all very foolish and boring. They would not even let us inside when we lost our invitation, even though they expected us and recognized our faces.

I thought it would be some time before they'd let us in, so I left to buy myself some wine. When I returned -- well, someone in Cloud Recesses had taken pity on the rest of Yunmeng Jiang and let them inside. But they'd left me behind! So I crept through their barriers, climbed onto the roof of one of their pavilions...

He cranes his neck to look up at Lan Zhan.

Warm, and laughing anew: And there was Lan Zhan, standing guard.

Three thousand? asks Bearberry. How many threes is that?

Hrair, Rabscuttle tells them. Hrair, hrair, hrair upon hrair.

All the rabbits look appalled at that, except for El-ahrairah, who’s focused on something else entirely.

Is he Owsla, then? A guard and protector for the human warren of - what did you call it, Gusu Lan?

It is not his sole duty, says Wei Wuxian. He is the nephew of the leader of Gusu Lan, so he has many responsibilities: to lead, to protect, to teach.

His voice has grown quieter, without him entirely realizing. (Gusu Lan, he thinks, does not deserve Lan Zhan. They never have.)

When he catches his melancholy thoughts circling again, Wei Wuxian rallies. But that night, yes, he was acting as Owsla! Ah, he stood so quietly I did not even see him at first, and startled me so badly I nearly fell from the roof. I tried to reason with him; he would not be moved. I offered to share my wine with him; he reminded me that "bribery is forbidden" and added it to the list of rules I'd broken that night.

Now, I thought this all very unfair. If they had not been so inflexible and let us in to begin with, I would not have had to break so many rules to find my sect! One thing led to another, and soon we had drawn our swords and begun to fight across the rooftops. To this day, I have never met as skilled a swordsman as Lan Zhan. He was my match. My equal. I could not even be too angry anymore -- I was having too much fun!

A dramatic pause.

Until he broke my wine jars and succeeded in drawing me down from the roof.

Truly, that was the greatest tragedy of the entire night. Those poor bottles of Emperor's Smile.

The rabbits trade glances, and again it’s Rabscuttle who comes to their aid. A human drink, he explains. Like the finest morning dew on fresh berries.

Oh! Now they sound appalled at the loss. Saxifrage stamps a paw at Lan Wangji, daringly.

Ah, no, it's all right, he has brought me plenty of wine since! He pats Saxifrage's paw with one of his own. But wine is forbidden in Cloud Recesses, you see, and Lan Zhan had been raised to believe every one of those three thousand rules must be followed without question. I decided right then and there that I would befriend him, and try to teach him to have more fun.

It worked. It took many years, but it worked! Over time we have become dear friends. He is my zhiji now -- the one who knows me best of all others. And he will even break the rules of Gusu Lan if it means we can spend our days together. A whisker-flick of a smile. Meanwhile, when I am in disarray, so much that I do not even remember my last meal, he has spent so many years living so precisely that he can bring me back to order in an instant. We balance each other very well.

Like Rabscuttle and the prince, Saxifrage says, decisively. Rabscuttle groans and flops on his side, his back to them, while El-ahrairah rolls over and over in a fit of playful amusement.

Like Rabscuttle and the prince! agrees Wei Wuxian triumphantly, before dissolving into laughter himself.

Lan Wangji watches this spectacle with quiet, gentle amusement.

In between his snickers, Wei Wuxian tosses a glance up at Lan Zhan, and nearly has to hide his face at the fondness in Lan Zhan's look. He is so beautiful when he is happy!

So that is our story. He nuzzles Saxifrage, then hops over to lean against Lan Zhan's leg. Part of it, at least. Ah, it is so nice to tell you about us and know you can understand what I say!

Lan Wangji rubs Wei Ying behind the ears, and after a moment of watching Cloudfoot comes over and puts a hopeful paw on his knee.

There is no way he can deny such a request, and he pets him as well.

I think so too, says Saxifrage.

Cloudfoot's newfound boldness encourages Bearberry to edge closer as well; soon, Lan Zhan has a third rabbit gingerly sniffing at his robes.

Wei Wuxian snuggles close, eyes drifting shut in bliss. If you have your own stories to share, he says, I will tell every one of them to Lan Zhan when I am human again.
